Controversial questions
Study #22
What is a controversial question?
It is a non-essential question on any subject that has no meaningful effect on a believer’s spiritual growth and maturity.
The enemy’s strategy is to shunt believers’ attention and time to such matters, bring division, and take their focus off Jesus.
“But avoid stupid and foolish controversies and genealogies and dissensions and wrangling about the Law, for they are unprofitable and futile.”
Titus 3:9
“Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analysing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.”
2 Timothy 2:15
The above two scriptures warn us against controversial questions and encourage us to make ourselves available to God and to proclaim the Word in a pure manner. There is a saying that underlines this: “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing”.
Paul says it beautifully:
“For I resolved to know nothing (to be acquainted with nothing, to make a display of the knowledge of nothing, and to be conscious of nothing) among you except Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and Him crucified.”
1 Corinthians 2:2
Jesus is the victor over sin and death, and we are more than conquerors in Him. That is the most important matter for us as believers. It is the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is what we must proclaim and live
“But in your hearts set Christ apart as holy [and acknowledge Him] as Lord….”
1 Peter 3:15
Conclusion
Focus on Him. He is our life, the Bread of Life. He is our EVERYTHING!
“[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognising and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly], and that I may in that same way come to know the power outflowing from His resurrection [which it exerts over believers], and that I may so share His sufferings as to be continually transformed [in spirit into His likeness even] to His death, [in the hope]
