How does one wait for an answer to prayer?

Study #4

The Bible teaches us to take our requests to God in prayer. We do this believing that we are praying according to His will, for instance, for healing.

14And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us. 15And if (since) we [positively] know that He listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted us as our present possessions] the requests made of Him.”

1 John 5:14-15

We put our faith in God and the truth of His Word:

7For truly, let not such a person imagine that he will receive anything [he asks for] from the Lord, 8[For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].”

James 1:7-8

“Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].”

Hebrews 11:1

What should our attitude be while we wait for the manifestation of the answer to our prayer?

19He did not weaken in faith when he considered the [utter] impotence of his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or [when he considered] the barrenness of Sarah’s [deadened] womb. 20No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God, 21Fully satisfied and assured that God was able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He had promised.”

Romans 4:19-21

Here Abraham sets the example:

  1. He does not allow doubt and unbelief to get the upper hand.
  2. He strengthens himself by, in faith, worshipping and praising God.
  3. He is convinced that God can do what He promised. He fully trusts God.

Abraham’s unmoving faith ensured God’s favour.

Conclusion

Do not passively wait for God’s promises to become true but strengthen your faith according to Abraham’s example.
