The greatest commandment
Study #29
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment of the law?”
“37…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind (intellect). 38This is the great (most important, principal) and first commandment.”
Matthew 22:37-38
What does it mean to love Him?
Is it only a feeling, a bubbling up of emotion? It is that too, but Jesus gives us the perfect answer:
“21The person who has My commands and keeps them is the one who [really] loves Me; and whoever [really] loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I [too] will love him and will show (reveal, manifest) Myself to him. [I will let Myself be clearly seen by him and make Myself real to him.] 23.…If a person [really] loves Me, he will keep My word [obey My teaching]; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home (abode, special dwelling place) with him.”
John 14:21,23.
The person that truly loves Him will keep and do His Word. This person will read the Bible and live accordingly.
Our love for God is measurable. A parent measures how much a child loves him by noting his behaviour, obedience, and respect. It is the same with God. The extent of our love for Him is reflected in our obedience to his Word.
You might say you don’t “feel” your love for God. That was the same for me. My love for God was in my head, not my heart. Then I asked God to make me “feel” my love for Him. Now the tears of awe and respect flow when I think of Him and talk to Him, praise Him, and worship Him. Now I WANT to obey Him.
This is how David says it:
“Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths…”
Psalm 25:4
God spoke directly to Moses, as a man would speak to his friend. Moses’ request was:
“…if I have found favour in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You [progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with You, perceiving and recognizing and understanding more strongly and clearly] and that I may find favour in Your sight…”
Exodus 33:13
Conclusion
Let us become doers of the Word, people that live in obedience to God.
“…to obey is better than sacrifice…”
1 Samuel 15:22
