Can I hear the Lord speak?
Study #36
“But He replied, It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4
“…You have given me the capacity to hear and obey…”
Psalm 40:6
We are created with the ability to hear and recognise His voice. Herein lies a deep mystery:
“…the sheep hear his voice and pay attention to it. And [knowing that they listen] he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out [to pasture].”
Die skape luister na die herder se stem. Hy roep sy skape op hulle name en lei hulle uit.”
John 10:3
In this verse John uses the example of Jesus as our Shepherd. At that time the shepherd walked ahead of his sheep. They followed him because they knew his voice. In the same way God wants to be our Shepherd and guide on our life path.
What must we take note of?
- Not to be stubborn. Hebrews 3:15 encourages us not to harden our hearts. Instead, listen to His voice. Purposefully set yourself up to hear God
- Not to make a decision until you have drawn near to God with an open heart on the matter. Prior decisions can result in us not hearing what we should but want to hear.
- To take note of every thought and emotion. God always talks with a soft voice – one we so often miss or do not recognise
- To be alert to hear Him in any way. He often answers us in a way that we do not expect
- To be still before the Lord. Wait on Him. Listen to His voice!
“Out of the heavens He let you hear His voice to discipline and admonish you; and on earth He let you see His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire.”
Deuteronomy 4:36
“11…’Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord.’ And behold, the Lord was passing by, and a great and powerful wind was tearing out the mountains and breaking the rocks in pieces before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind, [there was] an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake, [there was] a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire, [there was] the sound of a gentle blowing. 13When Elijah heard the sound, he wrapped his face in his mantle (cloak) and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’”
1 Kings 19:11-13
Conclusion
“I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.”
Psalm 40:1
