Integrity

Study #12

Integrity is described as maintaining an unimpeachable state of morality, honesty, uprightness, trustworthiness and virtuousness. It is a quality that enables you to make good decisions and to act in wisdom and steadfastness under all circumstances.

Integrity is also very important to God. Throughout the Bible we see how important the quality of integrity is to God.

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said concerning him, See! Here is an Israelite indeed [a true descendant of Jacob], in whom there is no guile nor deceit nor falsehood nor duplicity!”

John 1:47

It is interesting that Jesus saw this quality in Nathanael while still far off.

In Genesis 20 we read about the incident between Abraham and king Abimelech when Abraham said that Sarah was his sister, and the king wanted to take her as his wife. Let us look at some verses from this chapter:

2And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah [into his harem].3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said, Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken [as your own], for she is a man’s wife…. 5Did not the man tell me, She is my sister? And she herself said, He is my brother. In integrity of heart and innocency of hands I have done this. 6Then God said to him in the dream, Yes, I know you did this in the integrity of your heart, for it was I Who kept you back and spared you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not give you occasion to touch her.”

Genesis 20:2-3, 5-6

God honoured this king’s integrity and warned him in a dream not to sin against Him. That is how important integrity is to God. He even keeps a king that does not serve Him from sinning against Him.

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit wants to renew us to such an extent that our hearts will not yearn to do the wrong things. He freed us from the power of sin and faithfully keeps watch over us. If we fail to meet God’s standard of integrity, we can boldly go to the throne of grace to be helped.

8Make me to hear joy and gladness and be satisfied; let the bones which You have broken rejoice…. 12Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.”
