May believers continue to sin?
Study #27
Is it true?
Is it true that a believer may continue to sin because God’s grace is sufficient? No, definitely not! That is a twisting of the meaning of God’s grace.
“…ungodly (impious, profane) persons who pervert the grace (the spiritual blessing and favour) of our God into lawlessness and wantonness and immorality, and disown and deny our sole Master and Lord, Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).”
Jude 1:4
What does His grace mean regarding sin?
It is a fact that we all sin. However, the following verses refer to sin in the everyday walk of life and not a deliberate sinful lifestyle. And yes, here you will find grace and forgiveness.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.
Romans 3:23 (New International Version [NIV] translation)
8“If we say we have no sin [refusing to admit that we are sinners], we delude and lead ourselves astray, and the Truth [which the Gospel presents] is not in us [does not dwell in our hearts].9If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].”
1 John 1:8-9
The grace of God makes it possible for us to seek and receive forgiveness when we become aware of sin in our lives. A further aspect of His grace is the ability we receive through the power of the Holy Spirit not to want to sin. When we are born again we truly become a new creation, and as we are now filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, it is possible for us to walk away from a sinful lifestyle because that is no longer who we are. We are now new creations in Christ.
”1…Are we to remain in sin in order that God’s grace (favour and mercy) may multiply and overflow? 2Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer? 14For sin shall not [any longer] exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law [as slaves], but under grace [as subjects of God’s favour and mercy].”
Romans 6:1,2,14.
”6No one who abides in Him [who lives and remains in communion with and in obedience to Him–deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] commits (practices) sin. No one who [habitually] sins has either seen or known Him [recognized, perceived, or understood Him, or has had an experiential acquaintance with Him]. 9No one born (begotten) of God [deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin, for God’s nature abides in him [His principle of life, the divine sperm, remains permanently within him]; and he cannot practice sinning because he is born (begotten) of God.
1 Johan 3:6,9
”22Strip yourselves of your former nature [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion; 23And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude], 24And put on the new nature (the regenerate self) created in God’s image, [Godlike] in true righteousness and holiness.
Ephesians 4:22-24
Conclusion
The true believer endeavours to live his life in his new identity in Christ. Therefore, we can declare: “His grace is sufficient for me”.
