The day of my death has been predetermined
Study #37
Is this statement correct?
No, probably not.
“[Although all have sinned] be not wicked over much or wilfully, neither be foolish–why should you die before your time?”
Ecclesiastes 7:17
Two statements are made here:
- We do have a fixed day of death.
- Unwise behaviour can shorten this time.
“The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord prolongs one’s days, but the years of the wicked shall be made short.”
Proverbs 10:27
“Men who were snatched away before their time, whose foundations were poured out like a stream [during the flood.”
Job 22:16
These verses remind me of a chorus we sang when we were children:
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The rains came down and the floods came up
And the house on the rock stood firm
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The rains came down and the floods came up
And the house on the sand went crash
“Honour your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.”
Deuteronomy 5:16
This is the only commandment that has a promise! Although our earthly fathers and mothers are not perfect, this fact is not even mentioned in God’s instruction. No, obedience to His instruction is sufficient to bring His blessing into our lives – to have a long and happy life. Herein is the mystery of wisdom!
“10The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning (the chief and choice part) of Wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight and understanding. 11For by me [Wisdom from God] your days shall be multiplied, and the years of your life shall be increased. 12If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scorn, you alone will bear it and pay the penalty.”
Proverbs 9:10-12
Conclusion
“16Length of days is in her right hand, and in her left hand are riches and honour.
17Her ways are highways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18She is a tree of life to those who lay hold on her; and happy (blessed, fortunate, to be envied) is everyone who holds her fast.”
Proverbs 3:16-18
To the Bible a long life is a blessing from the hand of God. We have a big role to play in its course and duration. Choose wisdom!
