Thoughts

Study #7

Our lives are determined mainly by what we think – how we think about things and what things we think about. We can rightfully say: “We are what we think”. The Bible underwrites this statement:

“Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.”

Proverbs 4:23

This verse directly confronts us to carefully look at our thought world. The Bible encourages us to continually renew our minds – as the Bible refers to our thoughts. We are also taught how to apply this practically.

How do I renew my thoughts?

The following three verses give us practical guidance on how to renew our minds:

“Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].”

Romans 12:2

“And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.”

Colossians 3:2

“This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success.”

Joshua 1:8

What does it mean to ponder or to meditate?

It means to think deeply about something, pray about it, make it our own, and then express it. In that way, our thoughts will be renewed, and the direction of our life will start to change.

What do I do with negative or unbelieving thoughts?

“…we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One….”

2 Corinthians 10:5

This verse encourages us to take our thoughts captive and to bring them to Christ in obedience. This Word paints a powerful picture –  one of no tolerance toward wrong and negative thoughts.

Steps to renew my mind

  • Realise and acknowledge that there is a better way to think.
  • Decide to apply it.
  • Fill my thoughts with the truths of the Word.
  • Stand firm not to allow negative or unbelieving thoughts in my mind, but take them captive and submit them, in obedience, to God.
  • Live in the expectation of the fruit and blessings of Word-filled thoughts: success, peace, overcoming, etc.

Conclusion

20My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings. 21Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. 22For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.”

Proverbs 4:20-22
